24h Device Permissions and Notifications

Last updated

This document is a translation. If there is any difference, the Traditional Chinese version prevails.

24h only asks for a permission when you use a feature that needs it; if you say no, you can keep using everything else. To turn permissions on or off, go to Me → Privacy & Permissions → Phone Permissions in the app, or to your phone's Settings.

1. Phone permissions

  • Notifications: show new messages, friend and group invitations, event reminders, friends' birthdays and more. Android 13 and later and iPhone ask first.
  • Camera: take photos or videos to send in chats, scan QR codes, and photograph business cards or receipts. Business cards, receipts and QR codes are read on your phone and never uploaded.
  • Photos: uses the system photo picker, so 24h only reads the photos you choose; it writes to your photo library only when you save a photo or video to your phone. The Android app does not ask for access to your whole photo library.
  • Microphone: record voice messages, Moments audio and voice input.
  • Speech recognition (iPhone): uses your phone's built-in speech recognition to turn what you say into text, without uploading it.
  • Location: only used when you send your location or share your live location, and only while the app is open; never tracked in the background.
  • Contacts: only read when "Find friends from contacts" is available and you tap it; phone numbers are turned into hashes on your phone before matching. Not available yet, and the Android app does not currently ask for this permission.
  • Face ID and fingerprint: when App Lock is on, 24h uses your phone's built-in unlock; 24h never receives your fingerprint or face data.
  • Tracking (iPhone) and advertising ID (Android): used only for ads on the free plan. iPhone asks first whether to allow tracking; if you say no, you only see non-personalized ads and the app works as usual.
  • Network, vibration and restoring reminders after restart: basic permissions the app needs to connect, vibrate for nudges and notifications, and reschedule event reminders after your phone restarts. These are not asked separately.

24h never reads your text messages, call history, other apps' data or photos you have not chosen, and never gets your location in the background.

2. Types of notifications

On Android, you can turn each type on or off under Settings → Notifications → 24h; you can also adjust them in the app under Me → Notifications.

  • New Messages: new one-on-one and group messages.
  • Friend & Group Invites: friend requests, group invitations and approval results.
  • Nudge: your phone vibrates gently when a friend nudges you.
  • Event Reminders: events and to-dos you set reminders for.
  • Friend Reminders: reminders such as Close Ones' birthdays.
  • 24h Tip: reminders only you can see, such as period reminders.
  • Care Mode Reminder: daily-life reminders when Care Mode is on (drink water, take medicine, rest early and so on).
  • News from 24h: new features, events and important announcements, at most 2 a day. Turn them off under Notifications → News from 24h; important notices such as account security and expiring files are not affected.

3. Notification content

  • Notifications show the sender's name and the start of the message. With "Hide content in notifications" turned on, notifications only say "You have a new message".
  • Push notifications are delivered through Firebase Cloud Messaging and, on iPhone, the Apple Push Notification service; see Third-party services.
